Grading of Assessment
Extension for Unit Studies
Grading Expectations
Grading of
Assessment
In all units, assessment items will be marked using letter
grades, usually HD, A, B , C or not satisfactory (and thus,
possibly re-submit) or Fail. Individual assignments may be
given a + or - attached to the letter grade (e.g A+, C-
etc).
At the end of each semester, grades for units studied will be
assigned using HD, A, B, C, Fail or Incomplete. The final grade for
a unit will be assigned by aggregating the weighted grades for
individual assessment items in that unit.
Upgrading
Incomplete grades
Learners who, at the end of a semester, have a grade of
'Incomplete' because of deferred work are still eligible to receive
the full range of possible final grades once they have completed all
assessment requirements for that unit. However, for those students
with a grade of incomplete where supplementary, or resubmit,
work is required, IIIBF regulations apply, which means that
only a passing grade or a failing grade is allowed.
Extension
for unit studies
Students enrolled in units of the equivalent of one-credit point
or less will have the opportunity to study their unit over a
two-semester period. For those engaged in two-credit point units,
students will have the option to study over a period of
three-semesters.
For those who opt to take advantage of the 'extra' semester, a
grade of' incomplete' will be given to those students at the end of
the first or second semester and this will be up-graded sometime
during the following semester.
Students who have not completed all items of assessment by the
end of the 'extra' semester will be given a Fail in the unit. Only
under unique circumstances, such as severe illness, will a longer
extension be granted as the policy has been designed to help
students combine work, study and family life.
It is the responsibility of the student to inform lecturers of
the expected completion date of work and those students planning to
take advantage of the extra semester to complete their work MUST
inform lecturers of their plans, before the final assignment
submission date, if they are to be granted the one semester
extension.
Grading
Expectations
For each assignment you will receive a letter
grade (HD, A, B, C or F) and your final unit grade will be derived
from a combination of these grades after taking into account the
different weightings attached to each assignment. The expectations
for each grade are as follows:
HD: Assignment
demonstrates:
-
an outstanding level of mastery of all elements of the unit content (knowledge and
skills) which assignment addresses;
-
a high level of original argument/discussion
referenced to material studied in the unit and material gathered
elsewhere;
-
a very high degree of competence in
assignment writing in the tertiary education context; and
-
a very high standard of work on all sections
of the assignment.
A: Assignment
demonstrates:
-
a very high level of mastery of all elements
of the unit content (knowledge and skills) which assignment
addresses;
-
a high level of ability to construct
arguments/discussions referenced to material studied in the unit
and material gathered elsewhere;
-
a high degree of competence in assignment
writing in the tertiary education context; and
-
a high standard of work on all sections of
the assignment.
B: Assignment
demonstrates:
-
a more than satisfactory level of mastery of
all elements of the unit content (knowledge and skills) which
assignment addresses;
-
a satisfactory level of ability to construct
arguments/discussions referenced to material studied in the unit
and material gathered elsewhere;
-
a satisfactory level of competence in
assignment writing in the tertiary education context; and
-
a satisfactory standard of work on all
sections of the assignment.
C: Assignment
demonstrates:
-
a satisfactory level of mastery of all
elements of the unit content (knowledge and skills) which
assignment addresses;
-
a satisfactory level of ability to construct
arguments referenced to material studied in the unit and
material gathered elsewhere;
-
a satisfactory level of competence in
assignment writing in the tertiary education context; and
-
a satisfactory standard of work on all
sections of the assignment.
+/-: Plus minus indicators will be used in
association with letter grades HD, A, B and C.
Resubmit: Assignment
demonstrates:
-
a satisfactory or near satisfactory standard
of performance on most criteria above, but
-
a less than satisfactory level of performance
on one or some few criteria above.
Fail: Assignment
demonstrates:
-
limited mastery of the unit content
(knowledge and skills) which assignment addresses; or
-
inability to construct arguments/discussion
at a level appropriate to tertiary level study; or
-
undeveloped academic writing skills.
