Sabbir Patel
Sabbir Patel joined ICMIF in 1996, qualified as a chartered
certified account (FCCA), he was originally responsible for finance
but has since been involved in other member services including
professional networks, ICMIF training simulations, conference,
sponsorship, ICMIF Series of Mutual Funds and development projects.
In 2002 he completed his Masters degree at the Institute of
Development and Policy Management (IDPM) writing his thesis on
Insurance and Poverty Alleviation, since then a number of articles
have been written for organisations such as the Asian Development
Bank and the Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest (CGAP). He
has a seat on the CGAP Microinsurance Working Group (a
consortium of 29 bilateral and multilateral donor agencies) and is
part of the task-force assigned to develop a set
of microinsurance donor guidelines. He now holds the position of
Senior Vice-President at ICMIF and is responsible for establishing
and supporting cooperative-based schemes around the world.
In addition he is spearheading the Federations support to the
Takaful sector, writing two publications Takaful and Poverty
Alleviation and Takaful an Opportunity for ICMIF members
(co-written with Dr Masum Billah). He has set up the ICMIF Takaful
website
www.icmif.org/takaful and is
implementing a number of Takaful specific services including the
establishment of cooperative based Takaful schemes in developing and
developed insurance markets.
Currently he is completing his Phd on the impact of insurance on the
livelihoods of the poor.
